HOW TO PLAY COWS & CHICKENS

THE DEAL

Use two decks with different color backs. Each deck is split into two and players take one half of each deck so that they have roughly fifty two cards. No shuffling is required.

THE PLAY

Player one selects four cards and places them behind a screen in a row e.g. ♠️ ♥️ ♦️ ♥️.
Player two should not be able to see the cards. These cards will not change until the end of the round.

HOW TO WIN
To win a round, players must predict the combination of cards. Score one point for guessing correctly within seven attempts. The first player to five points wins the game.

GUESS

Player two must try to predict the suit of each card. Only the suits matter. They place four cards from their deck face up e.g. ♣️ ♠️ ♦️ ♣️.

ANSWER

Player one identifies how many cards are correct and in the right position using the cards with the red backs e. g.♦️. They will signify a card is correct but in the wrong position using a card with a blue back e.g. ♠️.

RESULTS

The cards are placed next to the row of player two’s cards e.g. one red and one blue. In this example they see they have one suit in the correct position and another correct suit but in the wrong position. They do not know which suits are correct.

TRY AGAIN

Player two then continues the same process of guessing the suit. After each quess, player one identifies how many cards are correctly placed.

CORRECT GUESS

When all cards are correct and in the correct order, the round ends. The combination is revealed. The player who guesses correctly scores one point. Players switch positions and a new round starts.

SEVEN GUESSES

If a player does not quess the correct combination by their seventh turn, they lose the round and score zero points.

THE WINNER

When one player has five points they are the winner.

TIPS

If the player guessing runs out of one suit, the other player can give them extras from their pile or by swapping the face down cards.

TIPS

Players can also replace face down cards for chips or coins.

Using four different colored decks is an easier alternative to using suits.

EXTRAS

The order of cards placed face down does not matter e.g. 🟥 🟥 🟩
is the same as 🟥 🟩 🟥 .

Both represent three correct cards, two of which are in the correct position.

ALTERNATIVE SCORING

The player who sets the combination gets one point for each incorrect prediction by their opponent, plus five points extra if they fail to guess correctly. Play to thirty points.
